You are invited to the NYSERDA Energy-Related Air Quality and Health Effects Workshop to be held at The Desmond Hotel Albany in Albany, NY on April 9–10, 2019. This invitation-only two-day workshop brings together science and policy experts in the fields of energy, air quality, and health effects. The workshop convenes early on Tuesday, April 9 and concludes late afternoon on Wednesday. A continental breakfast and lunch will be provided both days.

Context for the Workshop:

Through its comprehensive energy strategy, New York has committed to nation-leading energy goals to be realized through New York State energy planning, Reforming the Energy Vision (REV), Clean Energy Fund (CEF), and Clean Energy Standard (CES).  These goals include:

·        Forty percent reduction in greenhouse gas emissions from 1990 levels

·        Fifty percent of energy generation from renewable energy sources

·        Twenty-three percent decrease in energy consumption in buildings

Collectively, these objectives will influence energy-related emissions with respect to their spatial and temporal patterns and will also affect ambient concentrations of ozone (O3), PM, their precursors, co-pollutants and air toxics (which include hazardous air pollutants) as well as greenhouse gases GHGs. Human exposure to these energy-related pollutants and associated public health effects will change as well. Overall public health and environmental benefits are anticipated by reducing fossil fuel use. However, local and site-specific impacts are more challenging to estimate.

Topics to be covered at the Workshop include:

  •  Energy Market and Policy Trends in New York State
  •  Meeting the Technical Challenge for the New Energy Landscape: Emerging Technologies and Implementation of the Changing Electric Grid
  • Challenges in Energy and Air Quality Modeling
  • Trends in NYS Air Quality and Emissions
  • Ozone and Particulate Matter Precursors and Greenhouse Gas Emissions Estimates
  • Trends in Health Effects Due to Energy-Related Air Quality
  • Long Island Sound Tropospheric Ozone Study (LISTOS)

Who will be attending?

Representatives from federal, State and local energy, air quality, and public health agencies, and researchers with expertise spanning energy, health and air quality, and industry.

To Register:

Workshop registration fee is a flat $100, whether attending for one or two days. If you have questions about the event, please contact Kara Murphy at kmurphy@nescaum.org
